The Testarossa Vineyards Cat's Hill Criterium cycling classic returns to the streets of Los Gatos on May 7. More than 700 professional and amateur cyclists of all ages are expected to compete in the event when the tires hit the pavement in the 31st running of the renown race.
The first race begins at 10 a.m. with the race for elite women starting at 3:05 p.m. and the race for elite men starting at 4:10 p.m. The course, with a start-finish at Tait and Nicholson avenues, features the famous 23 percent grade Cat's Hill on Nicholson.
Race distances range from three miles for riders ages 10-14 to nearly 40 miles for the elite men. Admission is free for spectators, and race entry fees range from $15-35. For more information, visit www.catshill.org or call 408.248.8931.
The race is named for the rugged 23 percent Cat's Hill climb on Nicholson and also features six rugged 90-degree turns on the race course. The impressive course design has attracted many top riders through the years, including Greg LeMond (winner in 1978), Derek Bouchard-Hall, Karen Brems, Suzy Pride, Nicole Freedman, Eric Heiden, Davis Phinney, Bob Roll, Ted Huang, Eric Wohlberg, Trent Klasna, Antonio Cruz and Dylan Casey.
