Classic cars, tropical theme highlights of Lexington event
By Lisa Toth
The blacktop at Lexington Elementary School will look a little different on May 15. Instead of the usual schoolchildren running around, the play area will be decked out with an entourage of vintage cars, including a 1959 Jaguar XK150S and 1968 Mercedes Moge rescue truck.

The car show that draws automobile lovers from near and far is just part of the festivities that will take place that day from 2 to 6 p.m. as part of the "Tropical Days on the Green" event.

The school grounds will be converted into a beach-like paradise featuring fun for the whole family and community members. The afternoon will include tropical music by The Harmonics, a steel drum band, as well as lei making, hula lessons, a Polynesian-themed barbecue and food, a silent auction, a kids store featuring novelty items, a bounce house, an obstacle course, arts and crafts and an art show with quilts made by students. There will also be a sandbox for treasure digging.

"Days on the Green" has traditionally been the school's fundraiser, which benefits the Home and School Club. This year, organizers Linda Fagan, Tricia Hemminger, Lisa Sgarlato and Principal Raf Strudley gave the event a tropical theme.

Fagan said proceeds from the event help pay for a life lab instructor who teaches students about gardening and the environment. In addition, some of the funds may benefit the school's second language Spanish instruction next year through the International Baccalaureate Organization, along with grant requests from teachers for their classrooms.

"The state is just paying the bare minimum, so if you want your kids to have a great education fundraising is what it's all about," said Sgarlato, president of the Home and School Club.

"It used to be mostly families at the school, and then we opened it to the antique car show and it opened the event up to people from all over," Fagan said. "From my perspective, we need the money, and all in all it's a fabulous day. It's just fun."

The silent auction will feature diamond jewelry, use of vacation homes, getaway weekends, restaurant dinners and more. During the car show, people can buy tickets to vote for their favorite car, and the winning car owner will receive a trophy.

"It's quite a hook for the dads," Hemminger said.

Community service hours are available for high school students interested in volunteering at the event. Ticket prices are $12 for adults and $8 for children. For more information, call 408.335.2150.
