It was more of a team effort than an individual approach for the Los Gatos girls swimming team at the Santa Clara Valley Athletic League El Camino Division finals last week.
Not that the Wildcats didn't do well as individuals--it's just that the team results were impressive indeed.
Los Gatos didn't have a swimmer win the individual high point award. In fact, the top three high-point finishers were from Fremont, Cupertino and Lynbrook, respectively.
But the Wildcats had four of the top 10 high-point finishers, and six of the top 12. As a result, Los Gatos rolled up more than enough points to outdistance Lynbrook in the race for the division championship. The Cats had posted a 6-0 record during the dual meet season.
Junior Jessica Safir, freshman Sarah Safir, sophomore Lisa Ratzliff and junior Alyssa Uno ran up impressive individual numbers to help the Cats to big team numbers at the meet held Friday at Lynbrook.
The Cats rolled up 469 team points to finish well ahead of the runner-up Vikings, second at 434.
J. Safir, freshman Alexa Chavez and sophomore Caitlin Espe were each individual champions for Los Gatos at the league meet.
Safir won the 500-yard freestyle in 5:36.02 with Ratzliff second in 5:41.66 and freshman Kelly Boland fifth in 5:59.89. Ratzliff had finished second in the 200 free in 2:09.26 with J. Safir third in 2:08.55 and Boland fourth in 2:10.06.
Chavez was a champ in the 1-meter diving event, running up 380.95 points to finish an impressive 43 points ahead of her nearest rival.
Espe pulled out a win in the 100 breaststroke in 1:15.47 with junior Katie Sweeney second in 1:15.52 and sophomore Courtney Hawker sixth in 1:18.28.
The Safir sisters teamed with Uno and sophomore Mellisa Coleman to win the 200 free relay in 1:46.47 and the Safirs and Uno got together with Ratzliff for a second in the 400 free relay in 3:56.66.
S. Safir raced to a second in the 200 individual medley in 2:20.24 with junior Taryn Hunter sixth in 2:25.22, and Safir came back to nail second in the 100 butterfly in 1:04.10 with Coleman third in 1:05.32.
Uno cruised to a second in the 100 free in 56.95 and she sprinted to a third in the 50 free in 26.67.
Hunter was second in the 100 backstroke in 1:06.40 and she joined with Sweeney, Ratzliff and Coleman for a second in the 200 medley relay in 2:03.26.
The varsity girls will now look ahead to the Central Coast Section finals at Stanford University on May 13-14. Qualifying for the meet are S. Safir (50 free, 100 back, 100 fly, 200 IM), J. Safir (500 free), Ratzliff (200 and 500 free), Uno (100 free) and freshman Eloise Nichols (50 and 100 free). The girls have also qualified in all three relays.
In the league junior varsity finals last week, Katharyn Roberts was the high-point winner and Emily Tighe set a new league record in leading the Cats to a second-place team finish.
Roberts won the 200 free in 2:23.53 with Tighe third, and Roberts came back to win the 500 free in 6:32.10.
Tighe set a new league record when she won the 50 fly in 32.18.
Rita Warkov was second in the 100 IM in 1:14.12 and was third in the 50 free in 29.27.
The 200 medley relay team of Claire Egurrola, Kay Kirkpatrick, Warkov and Tighe finished second in 2:16, and Laura Martin, Roberts, Hilary Coates and Warkov were second in the 200 free relay in 2:00.17. Roberts, Hilary Coates, Tighe and Martin were second in the 400 free relay in 4:25.51.
Boys finish fourth
The Los Gatos boys weren't quite as successful at the league meet, finishing fourth in the varsity division and third at the JV level.
Junior Ben Draa raced to a fourth-place finish in the 50 free in 23.69 and was fifth in the 100 free in 53.26. Draa later combined with juniors Griffen Lerman and Mike Shamshoian and freshman Jacob Finkle for a fifth in the 400 free relay in 3:51.44 and a sixth in the 200 free relay in 1:41.24.
Shamshonian was sixth in the 500 free in 5:37.24 and Lerman was seventh in the 200 free in 1:59.17.
Freshmen Mike Masterman and Robert Rose combined with senior Justin Bell and junior Brett Krouskup to finish sixth in the 200 medley relay in 2:01.62.
In JV action, Andrew Schnell, Johnny DeSalvo, Ben Granas and Sam Carter finished third in the 200 medley relay.
