CRYSTAL BOWL HONOREES: Dr. Richard Adrouny, a Los Gatos oncologist, and Vivian Younger, a member of the Los Gatos Lions Club, were two of those honored at the recent Volunteer Recognition Luncheon sponsored by the Junior League of San Jose.
The two received the coveted Crystal Bowl Awards sponsored by Tiffany & Co. for volunteers who go above and beyond the call of duty.
Adrouny works with the American Cancer Society to educate the public about colon cancer and to make education and screening for the disease readily available. He is co-founder of the Colon Cancer Free Zone, a model that is being emulated in colon cancer organizations across the nation. Because of Adrouny's dedication, the message that early screening can prevent colon cancer and save lives has been spread throughout the county. Colon cancer is the third most common cancer in the U.S.
Vivian Younger volunteers at the Santa Clara Valley Blind Center, the Lions' chief cause and beneficiary. This award was given to only 15 individuals in the Bay Area.
WALKERS FOR MS: Linda Pfeiffer's Marvelous Supporters team raised close to $27,000 in the 10K walk that benefits MS research. Pfeiffer, who has MS, raised more than $7,000 individually in the April MS event. She will receive the Mission Possible Award at a dinner this month.
Other LG residents who were part of Linda's team and who raised more than $1,000 for the cause were Maureen O'Connell, Laurie Steckel and Carol Laucella. More Los Gatos team members were Carol Anglin (author of The Passionate Olive), David Culler, Linda and Steve Rice, Lev Revutsky, Lisa Lorona and Nathan Head.
The Santa Clara county MS office reached its $400,000 goal this year, up from $330,000 last year.
COUNTING BLESSINGS: The newly formed Counting Blessings Group, an affiliate of the Los Gatos Community Foundation, will hold a fundraiser at La Estancia June 5, 4-7 p.m., to raise funds to buy AutoPulse devices for the Los Gatos and Saratoga fire departments.
Counting Blessings founder Shannon Weich credits the AutoPulse with saving her mother's life. Her mother, Caralee Weich, suffered a sudden cardiac arrest in March 2004. She was without a pulse for almost 30 minutes and her survival and complete recovery are considered a miracle by medical professionals.
There are many heroes who came to her immediate aid, Shannon says, but without the use of a new CPR device called the AutoPulse Resuscitation System, she might not be alive today. Doctors never found the cause of her cardiac arrest, but she has no heart disease or residual damage. Her brain simply sent the wrong signal to her heart, Shannon speculates.
David Stonesifer and Larry Arzie own La Estancia. Tickets are $100 and can be purchased through Weich at 408.219.9636 or at www.countingblessings.com.
