Police arrest teen in connection with thefts at local tennis club
By Grant Shellen
A rash of thefts at the Los Gatos Swim and Racquet Club may have ended now that an arrest has been made.

Police arrested 18-year-old Los Gatos High School student Andrew Ford on May 12, said Los Gatos-Monte Sereno police Sgt. Mike Barbieri. Police believe Ford is responsible for stealing wallets, car keys and other items from cubbyholes at the fitness club on about 12 occasions in the last few months.

Club owner Ron Denevi said there is always a certain amount of burglary from cars in the parking lot, as there is throughout town. But recently, members started reporting missing wallets and other items from the cubbies and their cars. Ford apparently used car keys to enter vehicles and remove property from them.

Denevi and his employees started reviewing sign-in logs from the times the thefts occurred. He also set up a meeting to discuss installing security cameras.

"The day I had the meeting, [Ford] showed up here and a lady had $300 or $350 stolen with her purse," Denevi said.

Surveillance specialist Geoff Beale of The Alarm Company in Los Gatos donated the use of surveillance cameras and caught two more thefts on tape.

Los Gatos High School officials identified Ford's face, and he was arrested at school. He is now out on bail, and his case is under review with the Santa Clara County District Attorney's Office.

Barbieri said Ford was arrested on a charge of possessing stolen property. It is possible that he could also be charged with other crimes, such as burglary.

Denevi said he was pleased with the help of Beale and Larry Walker from The Alarm Company. He is still deciding if he should purchase the camera setup, because car and vending machine break-ins are still a problem.

"You feel violated, and I just felt so bad for my members," he said. "I'm just really thankful that we caught this guy."

Barbieri said he did not know Ford's motive for the alleged thefts.
