The Los Gatos Union School District's board of trustees unanimously selected Suzanne Boxer-Gassman as the new superintendent in a 5-0 vote on June 3.
Boxer-Gassman is the district's assistant superintendent of curriculum, instruction and personnel, a position she has held since 1999. In this role, she chaired the Excellence in Education or E2 Project, which resulted in the school board accepting 12 research-based recommendations for creating a world-class district.
"She makes a very good match for this district," said Mary Ann Park, the retiring superintendent. "She's just a very wonderful and intelligent person who will really move this district to the next level and has a plan to do that."
Boxer-Gassman will assume her duties on Aug. 1. Park will provide support through December to allow for a smooth leadership transition and continuity in district programs and services.
Boxer-Gassman is credited with guiding the district in the adoption of standards-based curriculum and instruction to move the district to a continuous improvement model in which data is collected, analyzed and used to improve student performance. Under Boxer-Gassman's leadership, the district has revised its science plan, developed and implemented a literacy plan, designed and implemented the writing initiative for K-8 and expanded the visual and performing arts program.
Boxer-Gassman holds a bachelor's degree from UC Berkeley in English and social studies; a master's in curriculum and instruction from the University of Northern Colorado; and a doctorate in administrative and policy studies from UCLA. She previously served as director of instruction and technology in the Cupertino Union School District. In the Cupertino district, she also served as principal of Lincoln Elementary School, guiding that school through a major facility modernization. Boxer-Gassman has coordinated the gifted and talented education and English learner programs and was a teacher in Denver and Oakland.
Park said Boxer-Gassman brings to the superintendent's role a proven record of successful experience in all levels and aspects of education including classroom instruction, curriculum development, assessment and improvement, resource expansion, personnel functions, complex school funding models, technology and staff and community relations.
