The baseball players at Los Gatos High School put up some pretty impressive numbers in the 2005 season--both as individuals and as a team.
The team won 25 games, the most victories in a single season in school history; the Wildcats won 15 of 18 games to win the championship in the De Anza Division of the Santa Clara Valley Athletic League, the school's first league title since 1989; and the Cats won three games to get to the Central Coast Section Division II finals.
And as good as those numbers were, the individual numbers posted by the Wildcats were equally as good--that's logical, since one set of numbers generally leads to the other.
The Cats finished the year with an incredible team batting average over .300. Leading the way individually in that category was junior catcher Marty Mullins. And it was his lofty average, his power and his defensive skills behind the plate that convinced De Anza Division coaches to select him as the Most Valuable Player on their all-league team.
Mullins hit .390 with a league-leading seven home runs to lead the Wildcats to the division pennant this spring. The junior knocked in 18 runs, tied a school record with 10 doubles and set new school marks in extra base hits with 18 and total bases with 87, crushing the old mark of 65.
Mullins topped a list of 10 Wildcats selected to the all-league team in the De Anza Division. Six of his Gatos teammates were named to the first team with one of the second team and two on the honorable mention list.
Senior Derek Thomas and sophomore Kyle Blair were double threats as pitchers and infielders for the Wildcats. The two shared time at first base when they weren't on the mound.
Thomas hit .385 with 21 runs-batted-in and a homer, and he also tossed five complete games for the Cats. He posted 2.49 earned run average and notched 66 strikeouts in league play.
Blair finished with a .338 batting average and knocked in 19 runs. He blasted two home runs. Blair also flipped five complete games and struck out 67, and he wound up with a low 1.53 ERA.
Senior left fielder Michael Brienzo won an all-league first team spot after hitting .341 with a homer and 14 RBIs, and senior right fielder Mark Johnson was named to the first team after hitting .346 and knocking in 15 runs.
Juniors Mike Gault and Justin Schafer joined the others on the first team. Gault, a speedster who played center field for the Cats, hit .345 with a homer and 11 RBIs, and Schafer was a smooth-fielding shortstop who hit .330 with a couple of homers and seven RBIs.
Senior second baseman Carlos Alonso claimed a berth on the all-league second team after hitting .267 and driving in nine runs. He teamed with Schafer to give the Wildcats a solid defense up the middle on the infield.
Seniors Jeremy Bays and Ryan Kiel were tabbed the honorable mention list in the division. Bays, a solid third sacker for the Cats, hit .293 with four round-trippers. He led the club with 22 runs-batted-in. Kiel split his time between the mound and first base. He hit .250 and drove in four runs in limited duty at the plate, but he was solid on the hill with a complete game, 52 strikeouts and a 2.61 ERA.
