The Broadway musical Movin' Out is a real song-and-dance routine. Of course, who would expect any less of a show that combines the music of piano man Billy Joel with the dance moves of legendary choreographer Twyla Tharp?
Movin' Out comes to American Musical Theatre of San Jose June 14-26. The Tony-winning show plays at the San Jose Center for Performing Arts, 255 Almaden Blvd., San Jose.
Movin' Out is a musical without a script--or at least a traditional one with dialogue. Joel's music and Tharp's choreography tell the whole story.
The characters of Movin' Out are already familiar to fans of Joel's music. Joel used characters from his songs, such as the teen sweethearts from "Scenes From an Italian Restaurant" or the childhood friend from "James," and built upon them to create the musical's story. The show follows six lifelong friends over 20 years, through first loves, losses and second chances, with the Vietnam War as a backdrop.
Movin' Out opened on Broadway in 2002 and Tharp garnered a Tony that year for best choreography, while Joel won for best orchestration. The show is still running on Broadway and has already logged more than 1,000 performances.
Tickets are $45-$72. For more information, call 888.455.SHOW or visit www.amtsj.org.
