C.J. Meisenbach's third-inning double didn't do much to help the Rockies in their Union Little League major division championship game against the Royals. But his sixth-inning double? Well, that was a different story.
Meisenbach's two-run two-bagger in the sixth lifted the Rockies to a 3-2 victory over the Royals. With the win, the Rockies won the Union Little League title and advanced to the District 12 Tournament of Champions.
The Rockies were trailing 2-0 heading into the sixth inning and had managed only two hits against Royals hurlers Scotty Guyon, Teddy Hendricks and Andrew Gold.
Catcher Brad Delaplane singled to right on an 0-2 pitch to get the rally started in the sixth. Jake Overstreet walked before Robbie Ferrante singled to center to knock in Delaplane and chase Overstreet to third.
That set the stage for Meisenbach. He ripped a shot up gap in left-center field to plate the tying and winning runs.
The Royals, champs in the regular season, had scored two runs in the first to take the early lead. Hunter Garfield opened the game with a single and scored on a sacrifice fly by Guyon. Vinne Cannino singled and ultimately scored on an infield out by Gold.
Garfield, Cannino and Hendricks had two hits each for the Royals and Gold struck out six in his three innings of work.
Meisenbach led the Rockies with his two doubles and Jordan White also doubled in the win. Overstreet threw three shutout innings, striking out six—including three in the sixth inning. Brandon Steele made a fine catch in right field in the third inning to start a double-play in motion.
Rounding out the championship team were Danny Davis, Jeffrey Hickey, Trevor Hunt, Clayton Hoagland, Teva Brender and Sam Delaplane.
