Giants top the Red Sox 6-5 in a nine inning Pony thriller
By Kevin Sparrer
A nine-inning baseball game isn't always exciting--unless, of course, regulation play ends after only seven inning. In that case, those last two frames can provide some real excitement.

The Giants and Red Sox of the Los Gatos Pony League proved that on June 15 when they went nine innings before the Giants pulled out a thrilling 6-5 victory. The loss eliminated the Sox from the league tournament.

The final run for the Giants was a little anticlimactic with Nate Burke reaching second and then scoring a few pitches later, but the bottom half of the ninth was a nailbiter.

Sean Harrington of the Red Sox reached first on an error and then stole second. Hank Hansen walked and Houston Hibberd reached first on a dropped third strike. But the Giants worked out of the bases-loaded jam to clinch the win.

Zachary Gray was the big hitter for the Giants with a pair of hits and three runs-batted-in. Brendan Crane roped a double and drove in one run, Burke had two base knocks and Colin Carney singled.

Hansen led the Sox with two hits and two RBIs. Josh Yun singled and doubles and drove in one, Tim Garvey belted two singles and Harrington and Hibberd each singled.

The Saratoga A's defeated the Cubs 7-3 despite a home run by Chris LaBouff of the Cubs.

The Giants also bested the A's 13-9. Colin Chapman ripped two singles and drove in two runs for the Giants, Carney had two hits and drove in one, Burke singled three times and had one RBI, Crane singled twice and had an RBI, Joe Vizzusi singled and doubled, Jakob Jorgensen belted two singles and Ben Huber, John Raynaud and Ryan Martin each contributed an RBI in the win.

Jermal Ladd had two singles and an RBI, Chris Diamond and Cody Nez both had a single and an RBI, Kevin Murphy doubled, Corey Lanagan and Ross Hastings had a single each and Carter Krach had an RBI.

The Saratoga White Sox eliminated the Astros from the tournament on 10-6 and the Saratoga Red Sox beat the Saratoga White Sox 5-3.

The Astros downed the Reds 4-3. Brian Comstock had a double and an RBI for the Astros, while Ryan McGee had a single and drove in one, Billy Cardia, Jamie Eldridge, Matt Calhoun and Tom Patton each added a single and Michael Economy had an RBI.

Harry Jordan had the only extra base hit for the Reds when he roped a double. Andy Aguiar and Justin Lewis each had a single and an RBI, Jason Shepardson, Jake Scullion and Sean Collins each had a base knock and Sean Fitzsimmons drove in a run in the loss.

The A's gained a forfeit win over the Saratoga Cardinals and the Cubs beat the Red Sox 9-7.

Scotty Ryvola belted out two hits and drove in two for the Cubbies. Luke Politi, LaBouff and Matthew Kirwan hammered out singles and had an RBI each, and Trevor Rowell knocked out a single and drove in two.

Yun singled twice and ripped a double for the Sox, Hibberd had two base knocks and drove in two, Sam DeFever had a pair of hits and Justin Krupp had two RBIs.

The Astros picked up a win over the Orioles 13-4 and the Reds bested the Yankees 5-4.

Shepardson was a strong player on both offense and defense for the Reds, throwing six innings and fanning eight batters, along with ripping a double and driving in two runs. Lewis was the power hitter, belting three base knocks and driving in three of the five runs for the Reds. Scullion also hammered out two hits.

Aguiar of the Yanks also had a good day both offensively and defensively. He threw five innings and struck out seven and belted a double and drove in a run also. Alex Silva added a pair of hits and an RBI, while Andrew Berg smashed a two-bagger.
