Gavin Honda was walking off the field after the first round of the Los Gatos Little League major division playoffs. And thanks to Honda, so were his teammates.
Honda blasted a walk-off grand slam to lead the Yankees to a 7-3 victory over the Giants.
In other first-round playoff action, the Royals edged the Reds 1-0.
The Yanks and Giants were fighting it out in a tough game entering the top of the sixth tied at 2-2, but Tommy McCullough came around to score to give the Giants a 3-2 lead.
The Yanks, though, would not go quietly. They scored a run to tie it, then loaded the bases for Honda, who cleared them with one swing of the bat to win the game 7-3.
The Royals and the Reds also fought a tough battle. Kyre Vega and Peter Danna sharing the pitching duties for the Royals and together struck out 11 batters. Brent Johnson scored the winning run for the Royals in the fifth inning after reaching base on a single.
The league's season-ending tournament wrapped up on June 16 with the Yankees finishing first in the American league and the Reds winning the National league.
The last game of the tournament pitted the Yankees against the Orioles and the O's came away with a 9-6 victory. Bryan Houp was the big hitter on the day, going 2 for 3 for the Orioles.
John Williams threw a complete game for the Tigers on June 14 in a win over the Red Sox. Williams struck out 12. David Anderson and Bryan Rose each had two hits in the win.
On June 12 the Giants bested the Diamondbacks 7-2. Nick LaBombarda fanned 11 batters and scored two runs for the Giants, while Tommy McCullough ripped two singles, drove in two runs and scored three times in the win. Jeffry Leong blasted two hits and had two RBIs while Lucas Alonso drove in two runs.
The Yankees beat the Royals 5-3 on June 11 in a seven-inning battle. A.J. Meyers and Marshall Finch both homered for the Yanks. Ryan McMahon hammered a double and a single and Jimmy Kisner crushed a double for the Royals.
The Astros downed the Reds 5-1 on June 10. Michael Murano threw a complete game for the Astros and Jack Fordyce blasted a grand slam in the win.
The Royals met and defeated the Red Sox 7-4 on June 7. Vega, Danna and Phillip Perry each drove in two runs and Vega crushed a home run.
The D'backs also bested the Astros on June 7, 2-0. Robbie Dunne threw a 1-hit shutout, fanning 14. Vince Augustine also had two hits in the win.
