No fireworks, but the town still plans to have a blast on July 4th
By Jennifer McLain
There may not be fireworks at this year's July 4th festival in Los Gatos, but officials are using the opportunity to present something much more long-lasting than a 20-minute light show--buses.

As part of the festivities, the Valley Transport Authority will present its two new "community bus/light rail" shuttles. The shuttles, which will be free to riders, are designed with a "bus wrap," featuring pictures of various town symbols on both sides. It has a blue sky and cloud background, Mayor Mike Wasserman said.

The shuttles will replace the larger and less-used buses, and two new lines--48 and 49--will be added. Shuttles will run every 30 minutes.

"It's a smaller route using smaller buses that hit major stops in the Los Gatos community," VTA spokeswoman Brandi Hall said.

The last stop of the Vasona Light Rail Extension in Campbell will be used as a hub. The new routes, 48 and 49, will head south into town via Winchester and Los Gatos boulevards from there, Hall said. The agency's new plans call for Route 60 to still come as far south as Winchester Boulevard and Knowles Drive, which will be implemented on July 4 as well.

Besides the buses, however, it will be Fourth of July festivities as usual.

The day kicks off at 11 a.m. at the Civic Center lawn with a barbecue, music and games. At 1:30 p.m., the San Jose Wind Symphony will perform a concert including top-40s and patriotic music, which also features a live cannon as part of the show, said Susan Buxton, volunteer services coordinator for the town of Los Gatos.

Wasserman will read the names of the military personnel from Los Gatos after the symphony performs at around 2:15 p.m. on the lawn at the high school, he said. The ceremony will last 10 to 15 minutes.

After the concert, the Peninsula Banjo Band will perform as cake and ice cream is served. There will also be bingo at that time.

A barbecue dinner, prepared by Johnny's North Side Grill, will be served at 7 p.m. Tickets are $10.

The Hit Men, a rock band that will play hit songs from past decades, will perform from 6 to 8:30 p.m. They do not take breaks in between songs, Buxton said.

There will also be plenty of children's entertainment, including magicians, jugglers and a dunk tank. A 16-foot children's mural will be painted by those who want to participate from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.

"We really do try to have something for everyone. It's a great community event," Buxton said.

Although fireworks are illegal in Los Gatos, Buxton said there will be fireworks at Spartan Stadium and at Great America.
