Brendan Crane was a troublemaker for the Giants in Pony League tournament play on June 18--at least, as far as the Cubs were concerned.
Crane caused the Cubs nothing but trouble with his bat in the Saturday tourney game. He had three hits on the day, and all three helped the Giants score runs in their 5-3 victory.
Crane ripped a run-scoring single in a three-run first, singled and scored a run in the third and doubled home the final run in the sixth.
The loss eliminated the Cubbies from tourney play. Unfortunately for the Giants, they were eliminated a game later in a 9-2 loss to the Saratoga A's.
The A's ended up winning the Inter-Town Tournament with the Giants second and the Cubs third. In the Pony Championship Tournament, the Saratoga White Sox finished first with the Saratoga Red Sox second and the Los Gatos Astros third.
The battle between the Giants and the Cubs on June 18 went right down to the final out. Matt Goldberg singled and Scotty Ryvola reached base to open the bottom of the seventh and begin a two-run rally for the Cubs. Two more runners reached base to bring the potential winning run to the plate, but the Giants worked out of the jam to clinch the victory.
The Giants took the early lead with three in the first. Colin Chapman and Colin Carney each got on base before Crane singled, scoring Chapman. Joe Vizzusi singled home Carney and Jakob Jorgensen ripped a sacrifice fly to knock in Crane.
Crane got things started in the third with a single and eventually scored for the Giants.
The Cubs got on the board in the fourth when Trevor Rowell singled and worked his way around to score.
The Giants added an insurance run in the sixth, and Crane was in the middle of things again. Chapman singled but was forced at second, Carney reaching on the fielder's choice. After Nate Burke reached base, Crane doubled home Carney.
Crane led the Giants with a double, two singles and two runs-batted-in. Chapman had two hits in the win and Vizzusi, Jorgensen, Michael Arnstein and Ryan Martin added hits.
Rowell led the Cubs with a couple of singles, and Goldberg, Matt Kirwan and Chris LaBouff had hits.
