Los Gatos is back on track. At least, that's the word coming from longtime Los Gatos High School track and field coach Willie Harmatz.
A major resurfacing project was just completed on the oval that outlines the high school football field.
"The track is now brand new!" said Harmatz, who coordinated the project along with Dr. Bruce Springbett and Joe Zanardi of the Los Gatos Athletic Association. "The track is now completed and ready for the community to use."
Rain delayed completion of the project, but the track was finished in time for the annual Thursday night all-comer track and field meet series that runs through Aug. 11, and for the annual Dammit Run that returns to Los Gatos on Aug. 13. The Dammit is a rugged 5-mile race up the Lexington-Los Gatos Creek Trail, but the start and finish is on the high school track.
But Harmatz is quick to point out that this is more than just a high school facility.
"We invite everyone to check the track out and run on it," he said. "This is a community track, not just a Los Gatos High School track. It's so exciting to see people contributed to keep our track one of the best in California."
"Putting on a lot of track meets is a big part of the tradition of the track, along with all the workout groups that use it each week all year round," he added.
The Los Gatos Athletic Association raised $201,000 for the track resurfacing, but funds are still needed to complete the project.
"We're still a little short," said Harmatz. "We need $14,000 to pay off the resurfacing company. We have the rest of the summer to pay them back, so we still need the community to help us."
Tax deductible donations can be mailed to Los Gatos Track Resurfacing, Los Gatos Athletic Association, 20 High School Court, Los Gatos 95031, or dropped off at Athletic Performance, 55 W. Main St., Los Gatos.
