Officers arrest three juveniles for vandalism to vehicles, school
By Jennifer McLain
Three Los Gatos juveniles were arrested July 5 in connection with 28 cases of vandalism and more than $30,000 worth of property damage in the area of Los Gatos Boulevard and Blossom Hill Road, police officials said.

"The number of incidents is significant, and we wanted to work quickly to try to solve it," said Scott Seaman, chief of the Los Gatos-Monte Sereno Police Department.

Police officer Michelle Stanfill arrested and later cited two 13-year-old males and a 15-year-old male for felony vandalism in connection with the damage to several vandalized vehicles.

During the past three weeks, vehicles were spray painted, windows were broken by rocks and the paint was scratched.

Seaman suspects that the incidents are related to students being out of school for the summer.

"Typically, on school holiday breaks, we see an increase in low-level vandalism or window smashing of cars. Earlier this year there were a number of car windows broken by rocks, and other cars damaged by egg throwing," Seaman said.

On June 29, company trucks in the Verizon parking lot at 15900 Los Gatos Blvd. were spray painted, keyed and had their windows smashed. A tire was also punctured. Damage was also reported to other vehicles parked in the area of the Los Gatos Boulevard, north of Blossom Hill Road.

The initial estimate of damages is approximately $25,000.

The juveniles were also cited in connection with $2,600 worth of damages to Blossom Hill Elementary School. On June 27, rocks were thrown through the windows of several classrooms at the school.

Stanfill arrested the students after receiving information from residents who said they saw the juveniles in the targeted areas on several occasions. Officials said a follow-up investigation resulted in the arrest of the 15-year-old.

Stanfill recently served as the school resource officer in the community and was able to get to know students in different schools.

"As a result of that, she was able to focus on who she thought was more likely to be involved in something like this. This is just an example of having a good understanding of the community," Seaman said.

The juveniles were cited, but punishments have not yet been determined, Seaman said.

The case is still under investigation. Police are asking for the public's help with the cases, especially the vandalism at the school, or knowledge of any unreported incidents of the juveniles. Call 408.354.6825 or 408.354.8600 to report any information about these incidents.
