Early Los Gatans gather at the corner of Oak Street (changed to Front Street in 1895, and now Montebello Way) and Main Street on Election Day in 1883. The tall building at the right, the 'Wilcox House,' housed the Commercial Bank until it burned to the ground in the great fire of 1901. The Rankin Block was built on this site in 1904, and still stands today. According to notes penciled on this 122-year-old image, prohibition supporters were assembled in the crowd, including F.W. Crandall, who stands under the flag at right, holding a petition. Crandall and his partner, W.F. Rice, owned the 'Big Orchard Drying Establishment,' contracted every year to dry tons of prunes.
