Owning a business and making it successful can be difficult. But owning a successful business and managing to give back to the community is downright impressive.
That's what members of the Los Gatos Chamber of Commerce think, which is exactly why they have chosen Diana and Rob Jensen of Testarossa Vineyards as the recipients of the 2005 "Business Person of the Year" award.
On July 13, chamber members will host the third annual dinner that will honor the award recipients and will install the 2005-06 board members, including the new board president, Patti Rice.
Ronne Nassi, executive director of the chamber, said the board decided to honor local business owners three years ago.
Rob and Diana Jensen met while they were students at Santa Clara University in the 1980s. In 1993, the couple founded Testarossa Vineyards, which comes from a nickname given to Rob while he was a student in Italy--Testarossa means redhead in Italian.
Testarossa has won several awards, including the "2004 Winery of the Year" by Restaurant Wine Magazine.
Besides making award-winning wine, the Jensens have also offered unwavering support to the community, Mayor Mike Wasserman said.
"They've done a lot of outreach in our community, including offering storage for floats and props, providing a venue for fundraisers and working with cross-promotional marketing," Wasserman said. "They were picked because they're role models. As a whole they are being honored because of their exemplary leadership."
The couple will not attend the event, however, because they are on vacation, Nassi said.
At the dinner, Wasserman will install the board members, including Rice.
Wasserman said he thinks Rice is perfect for the job, not only because she has been dedicated to the chamber, but also because she is a successful business owner.
Rice has owned The Spa, an all-inclusive beauty salon, since 1999. After three years of owning the business, she tried her luck at the chamber as a networking tool.
"I was surprised when I went to the first meeting that not many people knew about The Spa," Rice said.
She served on the board for two years, and now said she is ready to serve as president.
She said she hopes to continue to get people educated, excited and motivated about participating in the chamber.
But this is not her main reason for volunteering for the time-consuming, unpaid position.
"I'm doing this because it's totally out of my comfort zone," she said.
