It was a crucial game in the District 12 Little League major division tournament. Los Gatos American locked up with Lincoln Glen in the final game of pool play at Saratoga's Congress Springs Park—the winner would advance to the tournament playoffs ... the loser would go home.
Unfortunately, Los Gatos is heading home. American lost an 8-7 heartbreaker to Lincoln Glen to fall out of the tourney.
Saratoga posted a 3-1 record to finish first in the South pool with Los Gatos American, Lincoln Glen, Branham Hills and Cambrian Park sharing second with matching 2-2 marks. But it was Lincoln Glen winning the tiebreaker to advance to the tourney semifinals.
Lincoln Glen was to run into another Los Gatos club in the semi's on Monday. Los Gatos National pounded Willow Glen 7-2 on Saturday to wrap up play 3-1 in the North pool. National tied Union for the pool title, but advances to the next round as the top seed from the pool by virtue of its 7-0 win over Union.
Union was to face Saratoga in the other semifinal game on Monday. The Los Gatos National-Lincoln Glen and Union-Saratoga winners will play for the District 12 championship on July 20, 5:30 p.m., at Congress Springs. The district winner will move on to the next tournament with the ultimate goal a trip to the Little League World Series in Williamsport, Pa.
National won the title in the North pool with the wins over Union and Willow Glen and an 8-7 victory over Almaden North. The only loss for the locals was a 4-0 setback at the hands of Almaden South.
Robbie Dunne tossed a complete game to pick up the mound win against Willow Glen. Curtis Breidenthal led the offensive effort, blasting his second home run of the tournament.
Rounding out the squad were Nick LaBombarda, Kevin Brogan, Tommy McCullough, Max Burt, Michael Murano, Tyler Olivet, Nathan Fumia, Patrick Shultz, Adam Gouldsberry and Anthony Varni.
Members of the Union Little League team in the major semifinals included John Cabri, Vinny Cannino, Paul Eischens, Clayton Freitas, Chris Gladfelter, Andrew Gold, Ricky Hastie, Brad Kettenburg, Nick Logsdon, Trevor Nichols, Bryan O'Dowd and Jake Overstreet.
Los Gatos American ended up 2-2—beating Cambrian Park 10-3 and Branham Hills 8-3, but losing to Lincoln Glen 8-7 and Saratoga 11-6.
Peter Danna went the distance to toss a 4-hitter and Ben Rosenberg blasted two home runs and drove in four runs for LG American in the win over Cambrian Park.
Hayden Hibberd ripped two hits in the win and Henry Kuckens and Kyer Vega each scored two runs.
Earlier in the week, Vega tossed a complete game, striking out eight along the way, to lead American to an 8-3 win over Branham Hills. Vega helped his own cause with a couple of hits.
Danna homered, doubled and singled, driving in six runs and scoring two, to lead the offense in the win. Bryan Houp and Nick Lamson each scored twice.
Tyler Litle, Philip Perry, Gavin Honda, David Picone and Sutton Roley were other members of the American team.
10-year-olds
The Los Gatos American 10-year-old all-stars had virtually clinched a place in the District 12 semifinals with three wins in as many tries heading into the last day of pool play on Saturday.
The American boys had opened with a 12-10 win over Quito, crushed San Jose American 13-0 and blanked Willow Glen 3-0 before facing Almaden North.
Ryan McMahon struck out six and walked no one in five innings to lead Los Gatos to the win over Quito.
Jim Kraus came back to flip a complete game shutout in the 13-0 win over San Jose American. Kyle Kevorkian tripled.
Los Gatos National, meanwhile, won just one game, beating Cambrian Park 4-3 before losing to Branham Hills 12-2, Almaden South 13-0 and Saratoga.
Union 11-year-olds
The Union Little League 11-year-old all-star team made it all the way to the District 12 championship game before dropping a 6-2 decision to Saratoga.
Union opened the tournament with back-to-back wins over Cambrian Park 3-2 and Quito 11-1 before losing to Almaden South 16-3. Union came back with a 2-0 win over Los Gatos National to wind up 3-1 in pool play. The 'stars knocked off Branham Hills 6-5 to get to the finals, but then lost to Saratoga. Members of the squad included Jeffrey Hickey, Daniel Kidman, Danny Rose, Brad Delaplane, Robbie Ferrante, Scott Guyon, Dallan Malcolmson, Jake McQueen, C.J. Meisenbach, Keven Spear, Andrew Van Brunt and Jordan White.
