Silver and gold are considered precious metals that are very hard to come by--unless, of course, you belong to the tae kwon do competition team at Sidekick Martial Arts in Campbell.
Sidekick participated in the 2005 National Tae Kwon Do championships held in June at the Anaheim Convention Center and came back home with multiple medals.
The team won a combined six gold, eight silver and six bronze medals in the tournament.
Eight-year-old Lilia Kazemi of Los Gatos won two gold medals as did 7-year-old Cierra Jewett of Campbell. The two contributed more than half of the gold medals won by their school.
Anthony Ortega, 15, of Campbell finished with one gold medal and one bronze in the tournament. Niaz Kazemi, 12, of Los Gatos finished with a gold and a bronze medal as well.
Chad Pearson, 15, of Los Gatos, Jacob Murray, 13, of Campbell and Nick Murray, 10, of Campbell each finished with silver and bronze medals in the tournament.
Isabella Demaria, 5, of Saratoga and Cody Jewett, 5, of Campbell each contributed with silver medals.
The Leckrone family of San Jose came through with quite a performance for Sidekick. Jack Leckrone, 7, finished with two silver medals, Kristen Leckrone, 36, won a silver and John Leckrone, 36, took a bronze.
The students compete for Master Alex Alamul at Sidekick Martial Arts, 2627 S. Bascom Ave. in Campbell.
"My school is geared toward training students to become champions," said Alamul, a fifth degree tae kwon do master. "We train our students to compete on national levels. Their success comes through our commitment to their training and parents commitment to their child's success."
In other local martial arts action, the San Jose Japan Karate-do Center returned from a recent tournament with a flurry of medals.
San Jose Japan Karate-do Center competed in the Amateur Athletic Union Karate National Championships in Lakeland, Fla., from June 28 through July 2. In a tournament of more than 3,000 competitors, San Jose was still able to come home with many honors.
Beginner Breanna Ledesma won gold medals and became a national champion in both her Kata routine and in Kumite.
Beginner Huy Nguyen became a national champion, winning the gold medal in the Kata routine. Nguyen also won a silver in Kumite.
Beginner David Nguyen won a national championship with a gold medal finish in Kumite and finished with a silver in Kata.
Beginner Joanne Pham won silver medals in both her Kata and Kumite routines, and novice Joshua Howell finished with a bronze medal in Kumite.
