Thirteen an unlucky number for Pony 'stars
By Kevin Sparrer
Thirteen remains the most unlucky number there is, at least for the Los Gatos Pony League 14-year-old all-stars. The Gatos Pony 'stars were eliminated from the tournament they hosted after losing back-to-back games to the Morgan Hill "A" team 13-3 and 13-4.

On July 23, Los Gatos fell 13-3 despite its best efforts. Nate Aguiar, who had been a strong player throughout the tournament, continued to produce, striking out six batters and ripping a single and driving in a run. Hank Hansen and Nate Burke each doubled and drove in runs in the loss.

A day earlier was a similar result when Los Gatos lost 13-4 to the same Morgan Hill team. Josh Yun blasted a triple and drove in two of the four runs for Los Gatos. Scotty Ryvola singled and had an RBI and Burke had a base knock and knocked in one run.

Los Gatos excelled earlier in the tournament, winning its first two games against San Jose PAL 4-1 on July 17 and Morgan Hill "A" 7-3 on July 19.

Los Gatos had quite a different outcome in its first game against Morgan Hill "A," thanks to a four run top of the seventh for the locals after entering the inning tied 3-3.

Colin Chapman blasted a single and went to single when Yun knocked a hit behind him. Chapman and Yun executed a double steal to put two runners in scoring position. Both scored when Jason Shepardson reached on error, and Shepardson went all the way to second on the play. Chris LaBouff singled and Aguiar reached on an error that scored Shepardson. Houston Hibberd belted a single to drive in LaBouff before Morgan Hill was able to get out of the inning.

Aguiar threw a complete game for Los Gatos, racking up 11 strikeouts in the performance. LaBouff singled, blasted a homer and drove in two, Shepardson doubled and knocked in two, Hibberd knocked two hits and had one RBI and Chapman belted two singles in the win.

Los Gatos bested San Jose PAL in its first game despite a last-minute effort by San Jose. San Jose scored its first and only run in the top of the sixth in a threat to come back from a two-run deficit. LaBouff quieted the effort when he blasted a two-run shot in the bottom of the sixth with Shepardson on base, stealing all the momentum from the San Jose team.

Shepardson had two hits in the game and drove in one, LaBouff had his two-run homer and Aguiar manned the hill with five strikeouts and three scoreless innings.
