Rowdies live up to their name in District Cup Tournament

Most of them have their hair pulled back neatly in pony tails. All of them have sweet, friendly smiles that make them look more like the girls next door than the girl most likely to drill a soccer ball past your ear.

But don't be misled by their appearance—the Los Gatos Rowdies are living up to their name.

The Rowdies did it all at the District Cup Tournament in Santa Cruz on Oct. 1-2 when they defeated the San Carlos Spirit on penalty kicks to win the girls under 14 cup championship.

The Rowdies and Spirit fought through regulation and two five-minute overtime periods to a scoreless tie to send the game into a penalty kick shoot-out.

Goalkeeper Janna Oswald stopped five straight attempts by San Carlos before Erin McLachlan fired the final Los Gatos penalty kick into the next to give the Rowdies the win and the championship.

It was a tournament filled with close games for the Rowdies. They opened with a 1-0 win over the West Valley Storm and edged Palo Alto Riptide 3-1 later the same day.

The Rowdies met up with the San Carlos Spirit in the first game on Sunday, and the results were similar to what they would be later the same day—after a scoreless tie, Los Gatos won 3-1 on penalty kicks.

Los Gatos came back with a 3-0 win over the De Anza Freedom in the semifinals to earn its place in the finals, then topped the Spirit again to claim the cup.
