Storm delays construction of bicycle lanes on Hwy. 9

By Judy Peterson

Casualty of the Jan. 4 storm was the construction of bicycle lanes on Highway 9 between Los Gatos and Saratoga.

Los Gatos public works director Kevin Rohani said construction was set to begin on Jan. 7, but last week he postponed the project in anticipation of the stormy weather.

Construction is now tentatively scheduled to start on Jan. 14. Project manager Melissa Huang said it will likely begin at the Saratoga end of Highway 9 and work toward Los Gatos. However, a final decision has not been made because Saratoga has not yet given its approval. Huang said there will be more impact on Los Gatos because there will be construction at the entrances to Highway 17.

Huang also said the Jan. 14 start date remains tentative because more stormy weather is expected this week. "We don't want to open up the roadway if it's going to continue to storm. It will already be a mess," she said.

The construction is expected to last for about four months. According to Rohani, if there are any detours, motorists will be alerted by signs along the roadway.

The bike lanes will be built on both sides of Highway 9.
