Joffrey Ballet of Chicago will bring its distinctive style of American classic choreography to Cupertino when the touring company performs Diaghilev Dynasty, three reconstructed Russian ballets at Flint Center June 1922.
There may be no better ballet company to pay tribute to Serge Diaghilev, founder of Ballet Russes Company in Paris, an influential component of the avant-garde arts movement of the early 1900s. Much like Diaghilev's ballets, which combined the work of experimental designers, composers, writers and visual artists of the time, Joffrey Ballet has presented original ballet incorporating elements of popular culture, technology and contemporary ideas into a classical foundation since 1956.
Founders, Robert Joffrey and Gerald Arpino, both classically trained, built a company rich with more than 225 ballets, often commissioning first ballets from now famous choreographers like Alvin Ailey and Twyla Tharp. The Joffrey repertoire also is known for its reconstructed "lost" works from the early 20th century including the pieces presented in the Diaghilev Dynasty. The rare performances include "Les Noces" (The Wedding), "L'Apres-midi d'un Faune" (The Afternoon of a Faun) and "Le Sacre du Printemps" (The Rite of Spring.)
