An eclectic mix of performances slated for Villa Montalvo's summer lineup offer enough diversity to match every family member's taste, including the kids. Offered in Montalvo's Garden Theatre or its sprawling front lawn, the lineup offers sounds of the Islands with an authentic Hawaiian Hula show, favorite R&B tunes from Kool and the Gang and soulful songs from Grammy award-winner India.Arie.
Catered gourmet dinners, prepared to reflect the style of entertainment for the evening, are served on the terrace before most shows for an additional fee. Menus to match the concert include Cajun Creole for a night of New Orleans jazz and Asian/Pacific Islands for a taste of Hawaii.
Children ages 5 to 18 can audition at Montalvo's Garden Theatre June 30 at 9 a.m. for a spot in a week-long acting camp culminating in a performance of Missoula Children's Theatre's Beauty Lou and the Country Beast. Local students make up the entire 60-person cast, while a touring team from Missoula provides the set, lights, costumes and props to put on the show. Previous acting experience isn't needed, so all interested children are encouraged to audition. The public performance is scheduled for July 3 at 7 p.m.
Na Lei Hula I Ka Wekiu, back for its second season, features 40 dancers combining traditional and contemporary forms of hula on July 11 at 8 p.m. in the Garden Theatre.
A staple on most wedding reception play lists, "Celebration" is sure to be heard when Kool and the Gang play their crowd-pleasing favorites on July 13 at 7:30 p.m.
With a new album paying tribute to such music legends as Aretha Franklin and Jimmy Hendryx, Joan Osborne brings a fresh perspective on classic songs still relevant today. Osborne performs July 16 at 7:30 p.m.
Russ Freeman leads The Rippingtons on July 17 at 7:30 p.m. for a night of smooth jazz.
