Hand-held 'Galaxy': Retired San José State University art professor Harry Powers holds a few of the more than 100 aluminum, bronze and glass-enamel pieces that once made up his sculpture 'Fluent Galaxy' that has been on display at the Rosegarden Library since 1960. When the library was slated for demolition, the city told Powers it no longer wanted the sculpture, so he numbered the pieces and brought the artwork home to his studio.

Streetlight project Hester's bid fails Mock-trial
As early as next winter, residents of the Beverly Tract area of the Burbank neighborhood may be enjoying better street lighting at night, thanks in part to efforts by Santa Clara County Supervisor Jim Beall's office.  More With a sharply split vote on Jan. 8, the state board of education rejected Hester Elementary's petition for a waiver that would have exempted the school from state monitoring for its academic performance.  More When Lincoln High School teacher Jennifer Thomas took over as head coach of the school's mock-trial program last year, the team was fresh from its second straight victory in state competition.  More
