Billy DeFrank center looks for rainbow over leaky roof
By Mary Gottschalk
The Billy DeFrank LGBT Community Center on The Alameda has launched "Project Rainbow" to raise $12,500 to repair its leaky roof.

Although San Jose's Redevelopment Agency gave $1.2 million to renovate the center, which was completed and opened in the summer of 2004, the roof now leaks.

Chris Weber, resource development director of the center, says to keep the project within its budget, they were advised to reuse some existing parts of the roof and just build around them.

"It's those parts that are now cracking and leaking," Weber says.

The problem became evident a year ago when winter rains caused pieces of ceiling tiles, grimy water and moldy residue to drip throughout the second floor.

As damage grew, portions of the second floor were unusable at times.

Temporary repairs were made, but recent rainfall showed they are not sufficient.

Permanent repairs and replacement of leaking sections of the heating, ventilation and air-conditioning system is estimated to cost $12,500.

Fundraising efforts started on Oct. 11 and Weber hopes the amount will be raised by Nov. 11.

The center's website, www.defrank.org, has a black and white graphic to track progress. As funds are raised, the graphic takes on a rainbow hue showing the amount already raised.

Donations can be made online at the website, or by mail to Project Rainbow, The DeFrank Center, 938 The Alameda, San Jose, 95126.

The center is also raising funds for its program through an alliance with American Airlines.

When members of the Airline's AAdvantage rewards program enter the De Frank's Business ExtrAA number, 527551, in the corporate identification number section, they earn points for the center in addition to the mileage credit they earn in their personal accounts.

Founded in 1981, the center provides wellness, social and recreational activities and emotional support services to approximately 400 visitors a week. It serves the general public as well as lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender people of all ages and backgrounds in Silicon Valley.
