Posting a couple of wins is not a bad way to start a season. The girls basketball team at Lincoln High School may have struggled a bit in the preseason with a 4-9 record, but the Lions have opened their league season with two quick wins. The Lions knocked off Overfelt 39-28 and defeated San Jose Academy 45-29 to open play in the West Valley Division of the Blossom Valley Athletic League.
Lincoln dominated the first quarter against the Bulldogs on Jan. 5. The Lions scored 10 points in the first quarter and only allowed two points from San Jose. Lincoln went on to score and San Jose was able to score a few more points, with four in the second quarter to Lincoln's six. The majority of the points for both teams were scored in the second half with Lincoln scoring 15 in the third and 14 in the fourth, and San Jose scoring nine and 14.
Alex Scoffone was the lead scorer for the Lions with 13 points, including three from the free-throw line. Michelle Bancroft was next with 10 points with two free throws. Nicole Smith, Whitley Davis and Kaylin Mitsumori each had six points. Smith had a field goal and four free throws, Davis had three field goals and Mitsumori had two field goals, including Lincoln's only three-pointer, and a free throw. Peri Brandalise also had two free throws and Silva Aguilar had two points.
The Lions had opened league play with 5the 39-28 win over Overfelt on Jan. 3.
Scoffone once again led the offense with 13 points with five from the line and Bancroft followed with 12. Davis put up six again with two free throws, Aguilar had four points with two from the line, Brandalise had three with one free throw and Smith had one from the line.
Lincoln was to host James Lick on Jan. 10 and will face Yerba Buena at home on Jan. 12 at 7 p.m.
Lincoln boys split
The Lincoln boys didn't have quite as much luck in the first week of league play, splitting their two games.
The Lions lost to San Jose 58-52 on Jan. 6. Tarik Hakmi was Lincoln's leading scorer with 18 points, including two three-pointers, while Diego Romero had 13 with seven from the line. Raul Leon had 10 points with two threes, Mike Fleet had four with two at the line, Carlos Ortiz, Daniel Garcia and Justin Weise each had two points, and Tommy Gaeta had one from the line.
Lincoln's first win of the West Valley Division season came on its first league game when it bested Mt. Pleasant 60-58 on Jan. 3.
Hakmi was again the points leader with 16. He had five free throws and one three, while Romero had 11 points with three from the line. Fleet, Weise, Gaeta and Nick Garcia each had eight. Both Garcia and Gaeta hit two three-pointers. Leon had two points.
The Lions were to meet James Lick on Jan. 10 at Lick before traveling to Yerba Buena on Jan. 13 for a 7 p.m. game.
Soccer teams win
The Lincoln boys soccer team taught Willow Glen a lesson on Jan. 6, besting the Rams 4-1. The win gave Lincoln a 2-2-1 record in the Santa Teresa Division and a 7-4-2 record overall.
Nestor Mora scored one of the four goals off an assist by Juan Flores. Luis Chaves had another of the goals on Francisco Heredia's assist. Ricky Dorrego scored one with Mora assisting, while Eduardo Garcia had the last goal with an assist from Dorrego.
Prior to the game with the Rams, Lincoln met and downed James Lick 3-1 on Jan. 4. Heredia scored unassisted on a penalty kick, Mora knocked one in on a pass from Flores, and Javier Reyes scored the other goal with Daniel Sanchez on the assist.
Lincoln will host Gunderson on Jan. 13 at 3:15 p.m. in its next game.
The girls soccer team dropped a tough one to Evergreen Valley 4-1 on Jan. 5 to bring its overall record to 7-3-1 and its Santa Teresa Division record to 3-1-1.
Despite the loss, it would seem that the Lions have two girls who work well together. Jessica Gore scored the goal for the Lions with an assist by Nancy Fernandez.
The two girls also connected in the game prior when Lincoln tied 1-1 with the Del Mar Dons on Dec. 15. Once again Gore put the ball in the net off a pass from Fernandez.
The Lions will face Westmont on Jan. 12 at 3:15 p.m. at home.
