Red Cross asking community to nominate heroes for recognition

The American Red Cross is looking for local heroes, both human and animal.

The Santa Clara County chapter asks residents, companies and organizations to nominate "Real Heroes" for recognition.

There are 11 categories:

Animal Rescue Hero--An animal that has protected a human or another animal in a time of need, or a person who has rescued an animal from a traumatic situation.

Education Hero--An adult or youth who used lifesaving skills to save or attempt to save the life or lives of others in a school or other educational setting.

Good Samaritan Adult (between the ages of 21 and 55)--An adult who used lifesaving skills to save or attempt to save the life or lives of others.

Good Samaritan Senior (over the age of 55)--A senior who used lifesaving skills to save or attempt to save the life or lives of others.

Good Samaritan Youth (under the age of 21)--A youth who used lifesaving skills to save or attempt to save the life or lives of others.

Law Enforcement Hero--A professional law enforcement officer whose life-saving action went beyond the scope of their job.

Medical Professional Hero--A medical professional whose life-saving action went beyond the scope of their job.

Military Hero--A member of the armed forces whose life-saving action during active duty status went beyond the scope of their job.

Professional Rescuer Hero--A professional rescuer (firefighter, lifeguard, etc.) whose lifesaving action went beyond the scope of their job to help another in critical need.

Spirit of the Red Cross--An act by an individual(s) that exemplifies the humanitarian mission of the American Red Cross.

Workplace Hero--An individual who used lifesaving skills to save or attempt to save the life or lives of others at his or her place of employment or on a job site.

The acts of heroism may have taken place anywhere, but nominees must work or live in Santa Clara County.

Nominations deadline is Jan. 19 and forms are available online at www.santaclaravalley.redcross.org.

Heroes will be recognized at the American Red Cross 2007 Real Heroes Breakfast on March 15 at the Fairmont Hotel.
