Scoffone's 15 sparks Lions to victory
By Kevin Sparrer
Alex Scoffone is doing what she does best this season--leading the Lincoln girls basketball team to victory.
Scoffone led the scoring for Lincoln in its win over Yerba Buena, scoring 15 points, including five from the line and some tough buckets inside. Her effort helped the Lions down the Aztec Warriors 42-27 in just their second game of the season in the West Valley Division of the Blossom Valley Athletic League.
Right with Scoffone in the scoring effort was Katie Silva, who added 13 points, including one free throw. Kaylin Mitsumori had nine with three at the line, Whitley Davis and Tarah Herning had two apiece and Ashley Guin had a free throw.
The Lions slowly managed to pull away from Warriors, outscoring in every period. Lincoln jumped out to a 10-6 lead by the first buzzer, led 23-12 at the half and 31-19 after three periods before claiming the 15-point victory.
The win evens Lincoln's record at 1-1 in league and pushes the Lions to 3-8 for the year.
Earlier in the week, Lincoln lost its league opener to Del Mar, dropping a heartbreaking two-point decision to the Dons, 33-31.
Again it was Scoffone who did the majority of the scoring for the Lions, putting up 11 with five from the free-throw line.
This time it was Mitsumori who was right there with Scoffone, scoring 11 points with five free throws and a three-point bucket.
Davis scored four, Silva had three with a free throw, Alex De La Riva had two and Guin had one point at the line.
Lincoln was to host Sobrato on Jan. 9, but will then have 10 days off before hosting San Jose on Jan. 19 with a 6 p.m. tip-off.
