Lions win two to top the soccer standings
By Kevin Sparrer
When Juan Flores and Francisco Heredia hook up on the soccer field, it generally leads to success for the Lincoln boys soccer team.
Such was the case last week when Flores scored off Heredia assists to lead the Lions to back-to-back victories over Leigh and Oak Grove. Lincoln now boasts a seven-game win streak, pushing its record to 10-1 in the Mt. Hamilton Division of the Blossom Valley Athletic League and to 15-1-1 overall. The Lions downed the Longhorns 5-3 on Jan. 26 and the Eagles 2-1 on Jan. 23.
Flores scored a goal with Heredia assisting in the win over the Longhorns. Flores also assisted Nestor Mora. Ricky Dorrego scored a goal off an Eduardo Garcia assist, Miguel Dorrego knocked one in off a kick from Luis Chavez, and Enrique Lopez scored with help from R. Dorrego.
Against the Eagles, it was Flores again with the assist from Heredia and Hector Baez with an assist from R. Dorrego.
The win over Oak Grove was crucial for the Lions since the Eagles sit in second place in the division. The loss dropped Oak Grove to 7-3-1 in the division, and the Eagles sit eight points behind Lincoln in the league standings with just three games to go. The Lions, by virtue of their 10 wins, have 30 points to 22 for second-place Oak Grove. Overfelt (6-0-3) is third with 21 points.
The Lions were to host the Royals on Jan. 30 and will face Leland (4-2-4, 16 points) at home on Feb. 1 with a 3:15 p.m. kickoff. Lincoln wraps up the regular season on the road at Pioneer (0-11) on Feb. 6, 3:15 p.m.
The Lincoln girls soccer team ran into some hard times last week when the Lions fell in two straight games without scoring a single goal. Lincoln dropped one to Willow Glen on Jan. 24 and another to Westmont on Jan. 22. Lincoln fell to the Rams 1-0 and 5-0 against the Warriors.
With the losses, Lincoln falls to 5-5 in the Santa Teresa Division.
The Lions were to host Del Mar on Jan. 31 and will entertain Andrew Hill on Feb. 2, 3:15 p.m. Lincoln will close out the regular season on the road at Prospect on Feb. 7, 3:15 p.m.
Lincoln girls win
The Lincoln girls basketball team came away from the week with two wins. The Lions topped Del Mar 51-37 on Jan. 26 and James Lick 58-13 on Jan. 23 to push their record to 6-2 in the West Valley Division of the BVAL and to 8-9 overall.
The win over the Dons was a big one since Del Mar went into the game owning a share of first place in the West Valley circuit. Lincoln's victory left the two clubs in a second-place tie, a game behind first-place Sobrato.
Kaylin Mitsumori led the Lions offense with 20 points against the Dons, with four from the line. Alex Scoffone was next with 16 points, including six free throws. Whitley Davis added eight points, including two at the line, Katie Silva had five with a free throw, and Ashley Guin hit two.
Against Lick, the Lions dominated the game, allowing only two points in the first quarter, none in the second and only three in the third.
Offensively it was Silva who led the attack with 16 points. Scoffone and Davis each had 12, with Davis getting two at the line. Mitsumori had eight, while Guin, Tarah Herning, Alex Dela Riva, Gabriel Americo and Jessica Weise each had two. Both of Weise's points came at the line.
The Lions trail Sobrato (7-1, 15-4) in the West Valley standings and share second with Del Mar (6-2, 11-9). Lincoln was to travel to Yerba Buena on Jan. 30 and will visit first-place Sobrato in Morgan Hill on Feb. 2 for a 7 p.m. tip-off. Lincoln returns home on Feb. 6 for a 7 p.m. clash with Andrew Hill.
Lincoln boys split
Diego Romero tossed in 37 points in two games, but the Lincoln boys basketball team could manage just a split in West Valley Division play last week. The Lions fell to Del Mar 46-37 on Jan. 26 after defeating James Lick 53-50 on Jan. 23, leaving them 3-5 in the division and 5-13 overall.
Romero had a big night for the Lions in the win over the Comets, pitching in a team-high 22 points. Romero hit six shots from the field and added 10 of 14 at the free-throw line to lead the Lincoln attack. He finished with a complete night, grabbing six rebounds, handing out three assists and snatching a team-high four steals.

Later in the week, Romero had tossed in 15 points with nine at the line, but the Lions fell to the Dons by nine.
