Scoffone leads Lincoln girls in title run
By Kevin Sparrer
Sometimes people are just suited for the job they do, and Alex Scoffone continues to do her job for the Lincoln High School girls basketball team--scoring points.
Scoffone is leading the Lions toward a championship this season. She scored 24 points in Lincoln's 57-46 win over Sobrato on Feb. 2, with four of those coming at the free-throw line. The win brings Lincoln to 8-2 in the West Valley Division of the Blossom Valley Athletic League, which is good for first place.
Whitley Davis also added to the effort over Sobrato with 13, including three free throws. Kaylin Mitsumori buried 12 with a three-pointer and five free throws, while Katie Silva and Ashley Guin each had four points.
Earlier in the week, Lincoln dominated Yerba Buena 62-33. Again it was Scoffone who led the offensive attack, scoring 17. Mitsumori was not far behind, sinking 14 points, including a three. Davis also had 14 with two at the line, and Silva hit nine with five free throws. Jessica Weise had four points, and Guin and Tarah Herning had two apiece.
Lincoln was to host Andrew Hill on Feb. 6 before hosting Overfelt on Feb. 8 and San Jose on Feb. 13. The Lions close out the regular season at home against James Lick on Feb. 15. All games begin at 7 p.m.
Boys basketball
Unfortunately for the boys basketball team, luck was not running through the school. The Lions fell to both Gunderson 59-56 on Feb. 2 and Yerba Buena 53-28 on Jan. 30. The two losses drop the Lions to 4-7 in the West Valley Division.
Diego Romero led the offense for the Lions with 16 against the Grizzlies, including four from the line, and he added four rebounds. Tarik Hakmi also added 14 with six free throws and eight boards. Michael Fleet had nine with a pair of rebounds, Bryan Mitsumori had nine with a three, Tommy Gaeta had a three and six boards, and both Daniel Garcia and Jagjeet Sidhu had two.
Against Yerba Buena it was Hakmi who did the scoring. Hakmi put up 11 with nine points from outside the arc and two on the line. He also snagged nine rebounds. Gaeta had five points with a three and three boards, Romero added four, and Fleet and Sidhu had two apiece. Sidhu also had a pair of rebounds. Sal Jimenez also had two free throws, and Rich Azure had one.
Boys soccer
A tough 1-0 loss to Leland on Feb. 1 did little to damage Lincoln's near perfect 10-2-1 record in the Mt. Hamilton Division. The mark is already good enough for the championship in the division.
The Lions, 16-2-2 for the year, had 31 points with just one game to play, a Feb. 6 battle with winless Pioneer. Overfelt was second at 7-0-6 (27 points).
Lincoln had clinched the division crown by battling Overfelt to a 2-2 tie last week. Ricky Dorrego and Enrique Lopez each scored goals for the Lions against the Royals.
Wrestling
Lincoln's wrestling squad inched one out 48-43 over Andrew Hill on Feb. 1. The Lions improved to 3-2-1 in the Santa Teresa Division dual match season with the victory.
Tevita Mendoza pinned five seconds into the second round at 217 pounds for the Lions. Bacilio Monterroso rolled to a 16-11 win at 121 pounds, and Andrew Hartman won a 17-3 major decision at 132.
Lincoln lost two other matches, but the rest of the weight classes were decided by forfeits.
