Dorrego is tabbed top senior in Mt. Hamilton soccer circuit

By Kevin Sparrer

Recognition is something that every athlete wants but only few actually receive at the high school level. Lincoln's Ricky Dorrego is one of that select few.

Dorrego, who recently signed a National Letter of Intent to play soccer at San Jose State University, was recognized as an exceptional soccer player this winter. Dorrego, who led the Lincoln boys soccer team to a title in the Mt. Hamilton division of the Blossom Valley Athletic League, was named the division's Senior of the Year. He led the Lions with 20 assists as a midfielder this year.

Goalkeeper Martin Reyes of Lincoln also received a special award as the Freshman of the Year. Reyes spent 1,650 minutes between the posts for the Lions and shut out six teams during the year.

Lincoln's Josh Sotelo was named the Coach of the Year.

Colby Roberts from Leigh was awarded the title of Sophomore of the Year in the Mt. Hamilton division.

Senior forward Miguel Botto of Oak Grove was named the Most Valuable Player, and midfielder Gustavo Fernandez of Overfelt was the Junior of the Year.

Reyes, of the Lions, was also named to the all-league first team along with a number of his teammates: senior forwards Francisco Heredia and Juan Ramirez and senior defender Enrique Lopez.

Lincoln also had the lion's share of the second-team picks with freshman midfielder Arnold Lopez, senior defender Tyler Shafsky and junior forward Nester Mora making the list.

In the Santa Teresa Division it was all Maricella Padilla from Del Mar. Padilla was named the MVP of the league as a sophomore forward.

Prospect also had a good showing, with both Megan Heykants and Hannah Gilbert receiving awards. Heykants was named the Senior of the Year as a sweeper, and Gilbert was the Junior of the Year as a forward.

Taylor Lundquist of Willow Glen received Sophomore of the Year honors as a midfielder. Ruby Robles earned the title Freshman of the Year for Lincoln as a forward.

For Lincoln, junior defender Karla Barajas was named to the first team, and junior goalie Melissa Martinez was picked to the second team.
