$4,000 scholarships help three at Lincoln High with career goals

By Alicia Upano

Three Lincoln High School students have won $4,000 Grove Foundation School-to-Career Scholarships.

Omar Garcia, Jessica Lynn Perez and Sandra Segovia, all juniors, attend the Central County Occupational Center for half of each school day.

Andy Grove, former Intel CEO and chairman, and his wife Eva founded the Grove Foundation in 1998.

The school-to-career program is designed to give students the opportunity to achieve such career goals as automotive technicians, paralegals, nurses, accounting and medical assisting.

Scholarships are only for students planning to attend San Jose City College, Evergreen Valley College, Cabrillo College or Heald College to earn two-year associate degrees or technical certificates.

Omar is currently in the brakes and alignment class at CCOC and plans to enter the automotive program at Evergreen.

Jessica and Sandra are both in the health occupations program at CCOC, and both plan to enter the nursing program at Evergreen.

The scholarships may be spent on tuition, books and related educational expenses.

While in college, students must maintain a 2.5 grade point average or higher, take a full course load, stay in their career program and attend Grove Scholars events and program offerings.

Students are eligible for an additional $500 if they work in a career-related program while in college.
