Lions nail three straight softball wins

By Kevin Sparrer

If three games can constitute a streak, then the Lincoln girls softball has a winning streak going.

The Lions have won their last three straight games and are hoping to continue their winning ways this week against Gunderson and Overfelt in the Blossom Valley Athletic League's West Valley Division. Lincoln was to host the Grizzlies on March 27 and will travel to face the Royals on March 29, 3:30 p.m.

Lincoln pushed its overall record to 6-3 and its West Valley mark to 6-1 with a 6-2 victory over Yerba Buena on March 23.

The Warriors came out early with a two-run first, but the Lions battled back with single runs in the second, third and fourth, then broke the game open with three runs in the fifth. In fact, in all three of the games in Lincoln's streak, the Lions have had at least one inning where they have scored three runs.

Bria Bohdanowicz tossed the win for the Lions. She struck out seven and allowed only four hits and two runs. She also helped herself with a pair of hits, knocked in a run and stole two bases.

Makenna Austin added a pair of hits and scored once, and Chloe LaRussa had two hits, drove in one and scored once. Reyna Moldonado also had two hits and scored once and Karena Gomez knocked two base hits and scored twice in the win.

"We had all singles for our 12 hits," said Lincoln head coach Hank Wallace, "but we were able to score enough runs to win."

Lulu Valle and Alicia Gonzalez each had a hit as well for the Lions. Gonzales' hit came in a pinch hitter's role.

On March 21, Lincoln defeated San Jose Academy 10-0 in only six innings. Again it was Bohdanowicz with the pitching duties for the Lions. She threw all six frames, striking out eight and allowing only four hits.

The Lions were all over the Bulldog pitching, knocking out 14 hits in the win.

Moldonado belted three hits and stole three bases, and Valle also had three hits.

Cayla Cavallero had two hits, drove in three runs and had three stolen bases. Bohdanowicz helped herself again with a triple and two runs, Elizabeth Garber had two hits and scored twice and LaRussa added a pair of hits, scored twice and drove in one in the win.

Gonzales added a pinch-hit single and a pair of RBIs.

"The girls were hitting the ball well," said Wallace. "They are finally getting aggressive with the bats, plus they really get into the games against San Jose."

Lincoln's first win of the week came over Andrew Hill on March 19, 6-3. Bohdanowicz was the winning pitcher again. She allowed only two hits and one earned run and struck out three. Austin was the power hitter for the day with two singles, two RBIs and two stolen bases.

Garber added two hits and an RBI, Moldonado had two hits and stole two bases, and Melissa Martinez had a single and drove in one. Garcia also drove one in on a fielder's choice.

"We played pretty solid defense," said Wallace. "We went out and hit the ball. They were awake in the first two innings--we scored five runs before the other team had one."

Baseball team splits

Unfortunately for the baseball team, Lincoln didn't have quite as much success as the softball team.

On March 23 the Lions fell to Andrew Hill 3-1 to drop their record to 6-1 in the West Valley Division of the BVAL and to 7-2 overall.

The offense was led by Cameron Rodriguez, who had the only RBI for the Lions with a double. Scott Healy had the only other hit for the Lions in the loss.

On March 21 the Lions had a totally different outcome, crushing San Jose Academy 18-0.

The Lions belted 13 hits in the win, with Brad Pickens leading the effort with a two-run homer. Pickens drove in four runs for the Lions with a pair of sacrifice flies in the game as well.

A.J. Montoya had two hits in the win and Ryan Cannon doubled.

Southpaw K.C. Rose, one of only two seniors on the Lincoln squad, was on the mound against San Jose. With the win, Rose is 4-0 overall and 3-0 in league.

"If we play to our ability level, I feel that good things can happen," said Lincoln head coach Stuart Piraro.

The Lions were to host Gunderson on March 28 before heading to James Lick on March 30 for a 3:30 p.m. start.

Ortiz leads Lions

Diego Ortiz won medalist honors twice last week to lead the Lincoln golf team to a pair of victories over Mt. Pleasant.

Ortiz fired a 1-over-par 37 at the Cinnabar Hills Golf Course to lead the Lions to a 236-314 win over Mt. Pleasant. Earlier in the week, Ortiz had carded a 2-over-par 37 at the Santa Teresa Golf Course in Lincoln's 236-295 win over the Cardinals.

With the two wins, Lincoln improved its record to 6-2 in the Santa Teresa Division of the BVAL.

Lions outrun Royals

The Lincoln track and field teams both rolled over Overfelt last week.

The Lincoln girls used their depth to top the Royals 74-49 last week. The Royals won seven events on the day while the Lions won eight.

Double winners Ashley Guin, Alex Scoffone and Jessica Gore sparked the Lions to the team win.

The Lincoln boys, meanwhile, won all but two events on their way to an 85-37 win over the Royals.

Double winners Dustin Nguyen, Justin Kirksey and Tevita Mendoza led the Lions to the team win.
