Sidhu, Mendoza lead Lions to CCS meet

The athletes on the Lincoln track and field team didn't win individual events at the Blossom Valley Athletic League finals held May 10 at Mt. Pleasant, but four Lions did perform well enough to earn berths in the Central Coast Section semifinals coming up this week at San Jose City College.
Jagjeet Sidhu, a junior, tied for fourth in the high jump, and Chris Mendoza, a senior, was fourth in the shot put; the efforts were good enough to get the two Lions into the CCS semi's. Joining them in the meet will be seniors Michael Fleet and Justin Kirksey, who each claimed a seventh-place finish.
The CCS semifinals will be held on May 19 at San Jose City College, with field events to begin at 9:30 a.m. and running events to get under way at 11 a.m. The top finishers there advance to the CCS finals set for May 25 at Gilroy High School.
Sidhu topped the high jump bar at 5-10 to share fourth place in the league with Kevin Blakely of Westmont. Mendoza was fourth in the shot put with a heave of 43-2.
Fleet ran his way to seventh in the 100-meter dash in 11.53, with sophomore Miguel Ramirez 14th in 11.70.
Kirksey was also able to a seventh-place finish in the 300 intermediate hurdles in 41.94.
Sophomore John Horigan finished 13th in the discus at 110-08, and the Lincoln boys finished ninth in the 4x100 relay in the 45.33.
As for the girls, the Lions placed in the top 12 in four events at the league meet.
Junior Lindsay Miller was the top finisher with an eighth-place finish in the 800-meter run in 2:30.03. Jessica Weise was ninth in the 400 meter in 1:02.91.
Junior Jessica Gore took 12th in the 300 hurdles in 52.03, and the Lions were 11th in the 4x400 relay in 4:27.38.
Baseball champs
Lincoln's baseball team has also been successful this year.
On May 11, Lincoln dropped San Jose Academy 9-4.
On May 9, the Lions defeated Overfelt 10-4 with K.C. Rose getting his ninth win of the year, pushing his record to 9-1.
Lincoln finished West Valley Division play with a 19-2 record, good for a championship in the circuit.
Lincoln was to take its 20-3 season mark into the CCS Division II playoffs, set to begin May 17, 4 p.m., at Burlingame. The Panthers, the No. 1 seed in the division with a 22-5 record, won the title in the Bay Division of the Peninsula Athletic League. The winner will advance to the quarterfinals on May 19 against the No. 8 Mills (17-6)-No. 9 Palma (18-12) winner at Santa Clara's Washington Park.
Lions wins a pair
The Lincoln softball team downed Yerba Buena 4-1 on May 5, just after crushing San Jose 17-0 on May 8.
Lincoln ended the season 17-4 in the West Valley Division and 17-6 overall. The Lions finished second to Silver Creek (20-1) in the division standings, three games out of first.
