Hot start for Vikes

The West Valley Community College men's basketball team got off to a hot start in Coast Conference play with a convincing 73-57 win over Foothill.

The Vikings opened up a 47-24 lead by intermission and coasted from there to the easy victory.

Big 6-foot-8 sophomore Bennett Davison pumped in 28 points to lead all West Valley scorers. Andy Newman and Taplar Mvogo pitched in nine points apiece and Jacobi Thompson, Bob Ladine, Jamaal Sanford and Toby Vares had six each. Scott Reeves added three and Derek Mickle hit two.

The Vikes had whipped the City College of San Franciso 77-56 in nonconference action earlier in the week. Davison led the Vikings with 23 points and Thompson nailed 17.

West Valley will host local rivals San Jose City College (Jan. 17) and De Anza Community College (Jan. 19) in a couple of 7 p.m. games this week.

Former Panthers star

Beamish had five points for the De Anza men in a tough 78-69 loss to Chabot.
