    City receives financial awards

A northern California representative of the Government Finance Officers Association presented awards to the city manager's office for the presentation of Saratoga's budget and to the staff of the city's Administrative Services Department for the Comprehensive Annual Financial Report.

The report gained the department a certificate of achievement for Excellence in Financial Reporting. This is the 8th year that the city has won this award, said Administrative Services Director Mary Jo Walker. The awards were given at the City Council meeting on Jan. 19.

Two new members join Hakone board

Ann Margo Mendeke and Phylis Davis are the newest members on the board of trustees for the Hakone Foundation. By unanimous vote, the City Council approved the two nominations on Jan. 19. The trust agreement between Saratoga and the foundation board requires that the City Council appoint nominees.

Mendeke is a nonprofit and political fundraiser who has done work for the Arthritis Foundation and Villa Montalvo. Davis is a paralegal associated with a local group of attorneys.

    Council reconsiders Azule Crossing

The public hearing for the City Council's reconsideration of its denial of the Azule Crossing proposed redevelopment has been continued to Feb. 2. The developers requested the postponement so that they would have enough time to prepare the new plans.

    City will cosponsor 'Millennium event'

The city and the Saratoga Lions Club will co-sponsor this year's July 4th Hometown Celebration.

The "Millennium Event," as it is being promoted, will be held at Villa Montalvo, with parking at West Valley College, said Marlene Duffin, Lions spokesperson. For its first three years, the event was held at Villa Montalvo. Last year, it was held at West Valley College.

If the city did not participate, event organizers would have to secure one-day insurance coverage, which would be prohibitively expensive.
