City will construct sidewalk

By Julie Mehta

A project to construct a sidewalk along the west side of Quito Road between Cox Avenue and Sousa Lane secured City Council approval last week. The sidewalk would provide access to the county transit bus stop for route 57 and would likely be traversed by people headed to Quito Shopping Center and the Southwest YMCA and by students attending Prospect High School.

The estimated cost of the project is $103,203. The city is seeking the bulk of this money, $83,203, from funds available under the Transportation Development Act, with the remaining $20,000 to come from the city's general fund.

The city received $21,403 through the transportation act last year and a preliminary allocation of $36,778 for this year. The city is expected to file an application for the other $25,022 needed next year.

Public Works Director Larry Perlin said it has long been the city's intention to get sidewalks on all major roads.

"We wanted to shift our focus to Quito now because we've been doing some other work there, repaving the road and sprucing up the area," Perlin said.

A couple of years ago, the city used TDA funds to fill in the gaps on the sidewalk on Saratoga Avenue north of Fruitvale Avenue. After the Quito project is completed, city officials are considering a sidewalk project on Saratoga Avenue from Fruitvale Avenue up to Saratoga Village.

Perlin said construction of the Quito Road sidewalk should begin by next fall.
