Public works director is dropping 'acting' in title

    By Kara Chalmers

Interim City Manager Bill Norton appointed John Cherbone as Saratoga's public works director on June 14. Cherbone had been the city's acting public works director since 1998, when he replaced Chris Fischer, who resigned for health reasons. Prior to Fischer, former Saratoga City Manager Larry Perlin held the top public works department position.

Cherbone, who lives in Capitola, began working for the city in 1992, as an assistant engineer. He moved up from assistant engineer to associate engineer and soon took over management of daily operational and maintenance activities at the city's corporation yard. On Oct. 21, 1998, the city council appointed him to the position of acting public works director.

Norton says Cherbone is a very proactive department head, who works well with the other people on the staff and has a lot of energy.

"If I ask him to do something that may be a little out of the ordinary or that may not be a part of his job description, he jumps on it and gets the job done," Norton said.

Mayor Stan Bogosian said Cherbone is always friendly and professional and that he is honored to have him on staff.
