Saratoga NewsVillage BriefsParadoxical exhibit at Gallery Saratoga During the month of August, Gallery Saratoga features original paintings in the mediums of oil, oil pastel and watercolor by local artist Therese Marie Doherty. Israeli dancers, food part of JCC celebration In a cultural event open to everyone, the Jewish Community Center of Greater San Jose, located at 14855 Oka Road in Los Gatos, hosts a dinner and dance on Aug. 6. A catered meal takes place at 6:30 p.m., followed by the Hora Ashkelon Dancers at 7:30 p.m. The dance troupe performs traditional folk dances from Israel. Those attending should bring lawn chairs or blankets. Cost is $10 for adults and $5 for children and seniors. Call 358-3636 ext. 38 for information. Learn watercolor at Hakone Gardens Among the programs offered through the Spring/Summer 1998 Hakone Gardens Arts Program is a watercolor workshop taught by Santa Cruz artist Mike Bailey on Aug. 14 and 15 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Bailey, known for his strong, solid shapes and bold colors, discusses his focus on good design and demonstrates the "wet" use of watercolor pigments. All participants receive individual assistance. At the end of the day, Bailey holds a group critique. The cost is $45 for one day or $75 for both days. Bring a bag lunch. Salvation Army seeks back-to-school donations The Salvation Army is gearing up for its annual back-to-school supply distribution and is seeking various types of donations. Financial contributions are welcome, as are school supplies such as pencils, pens, crayons, binders, books, paper and backpacks. Volunteers are also needed to set up and distribute packages of supplies to students. The goal is to assist 2,000 children this year. Call Liway Gimenez at 282-1165.
