The Westmont Warriors are going places this fall.
First of all, they're going to Foothill College this Friday to open the 1996 football season in a non-league game against Gunn.
A couple of weeks later, they're going to Santa Cruz for another non-league test.
And eventually, head coach Tom Sweeney hopes to see his Warriors going up among the contenders in the West Valley Division of the Blossom Valley Athletic League.
Sweeney figures Westmont has that kind of talent this fall with eight solid returners and a few talented newcomers leading the charge.
Westmont has not won a league championship since 1981, but Sweeney expects this squad to contend for the crown. He rates Willow Glen and Lick as the title favorites, but figures his Warriors will finish in the "top third."
Westmont, frosh-soph champs in the division back in 1994, posted a 3-3 league record and 4-5 overall mark a year ago, and a solid crew of players return from that squad.
Mat Meade, Kaveh Mansoor, Sam Licina, Scott Smith, Donny Haynes, Shantez Sumler, Adam Curtis and Angelo D'Onofrio are top lettermen on the Westmont roster.
Newcomers who should have an impact on the Westmont varsity are Adam Curtis, Nick Grote and Clark Haferd.
