Cars and flowers fill local gallery

Two very different visions of California are the theme of photographer Don Del Castillo's upcoming installation at Gallery Saratoga, located at 14435-A Big Basin Way. His show, titled "California Fantasy Cars and Roses," consists of photos snapped with a four-megapixel digital camera at the San Jose Heritage Rose Garden and fantasy car shows put on by The Good Guys in Pleasanton.

The exhibit opens Aug. 16 and runs through the end of the month. An artist's reception takes place Aug. 17 from 1 to 5 p.m. Refreshments will be provided. Gallery hours are 11 a.m. to 6 p.m., Tuesday through Sunday. For more information, call 408.867.0458 or visit www.gallerysaratoga.com.

High altitude trips topic of program

Among the programs and workshops it offers to the community, REI Saratoga has invited professional mountaineer Wally Berg to give a slide presentation titled "Everest and the Seven Summits: High-Altitude Adventures on Every Continent" on Sept. 3 at 7 p.m.

The founder of Berg Adventures International, Berg has guided more people to the tops of the Seven Summits than any other mountain climber. He will share slides and stories of his adventures and will discuss what he's learned about mountaineering and mountain cultures over the past 20 years.

The event is free and open to people of all ages. REI is in the El Paseo de Saratoga shopping center. For more information, call 408.871.8765.
