The undefeated season was on the line as the seconds ticked away in the final minute of play for the Saratoga frosh-soph football team last Saturday night.
The Falcons were trailing 25-20 but threatening late in the game against Monta Vista. And when fullback T.J. Florence shot up the middle for a touchdown with 31 seconds left to play it proved to be more than a threat—Saratoga had the lead.
A pass interception by Jeff Lyu moments later helped seal the victory for the young Falcons, and they improved to 8-0 for the year and to 4-0 in the De Anza Division of the Santa Clara Valley Athletic League.
The Falcons are now just two wins away from nailing down a league championship, but those will be two tough games for Saratoga. The Falcons host unbeaten Wilcox on Nov. 8, 5:15 p.m., at Los Gatos before finishing the year on Nov. 15, 7:30 p.m., against Los Gatos (6-2, 3-1) at Helm Field.
"Both will be big games for us," said Saratoga frosh-soph coach James Samuels.
And Saturday's victory against Monta Vista at Cupertino was a big win for the Falcons.
Phil Spencer, a running back and defensive back, played a key role in the victory and has been a key player all season for the Falcons, along with two-way stars Florence, Lyu, Matt Greene and Chris Greene.
"We knew we had good size and good skill players heading into the season," said Samuels. "Last year we had a good team—I've just kind of continued the momentum."
"The thing we stress is team," he added, "and they've played well together. We're gotten more physical and more efficient."
