A play within a play, Kiss Me, Kate, a musical version of Shakespeare's The Taming of the Shrew, will kick off West Valley Light Opera's 38th season on Nov. 9.

Based on the Sam and Bella Spewack book and set to classic Cole Porter music and lyrics, Kiss Me, Kate experienced a successful Broadway revival in 2000 and subsequently received a Tony Award for best musical revival.

Viewed by many as one of the greatest musicals of all time, the show boasts 18 Cole Porter scores performed by a cast of 28. Love, greed and jealousy play out in a comedy that follows two ex-lovers cast opposite each other in a production of Shakespeare's The Taming of the Shrew. Onstage and behind the scenes, antics weave a comedic tale of finding true love twice in a lifetime.

With a cast of players coming from as far away as Pacifica and Soquel, the West Valley Light Opera depends solely on non-equity performers to turn out three very professional shows each season.

The West Valley Light Opera production begins Nov. 9 at 8 p.m. with a champagne gala event to mark the start of its season. The musical continues through Dec. 7. All performances are held at the Saratoga Civic Theater, 13777 Fruitvale Ave. in Saratoga.
