It's not quite Christmas, but over the next week locals will be seeing a lot of festive canes around town.
The canes represent White Cane Days, a fundraiser put on by Lions Clubs around the country each year to raise money for the visually impaired.
The Saratoga Lions, which has been going strong in the community since 1947, will hold its local White Cane Days fundraiser on Oct. 1 and 2. Members will be out in front of Safeway in the Argonaut Shopping Center on Saratoga-Sunnyvale Road, and Gene's Quito Market on Cox Avenue near the corner of Saratoga Avenue, collecting donations. Money raised benefits organizations, such as the Lions Blind Center of Santa Clara County, which test the sight of young school children; help the visually impaired achieve increased independence; assist in local diabetes screening; and process recycled eyeglasses for the disadvantaged.
In other Saratoga Lions Club news, the club recently elected new officers. Helen Lemmon has been re-elected as president. Bob Cancellieri is vice president of activities, Elsie Riddle is vice president of programs, Marge Bunyard is vice president of membership, Jim Ousley is treasurer and Frank Lemmon is secretary.
The Saratoga Lions Club meets at noon on the first and third Tuesday of every month at Florentine Restaurant on Big Basin Way. Men and women looking for a way to serve their community are always welcome.
