They were celebrating at Saratoga High School last week when the basketball season came to an end in the El Camino Division of the Santa Clara Valley Athletic League, but for different reasons.
The Saratoga boys were celebrating a 69-53 victory over Los Altos and a second-place finish in the division. They were also celebrating their upcoming trip to the Central Coast Section playoffs.
The Saratoga girls were also celebrating a win over the Eagles that will give them a winning memory of the 2005-06 season as they pack up the basketballs and look ahead with anticipation to next season.
The boys finished the regular season with a 9-3 record in the division, second only to Cupertino's 11-1, and they'll now take their 16-9 mark on to the CCS Division III playoffs. They open at home against Aragon (11-11) on Feb. 21, 7 p.m. with the winner to visit Pioneer (21-6) on Feb. 23, 7 p.m. That winner moves on to face the Prospect (20-7)-Seaside (18-6) winner on Feb. 25 at St. Ignatius.
The Falcons wrapped up the regular season with the win over Los Altos, outscoring the Eagles in every quarter but the second as they rolled to the 13-point win.
Junior Bo Nielsen, a 6-foot-2 forward, had the hot hand for Saratoga with a team-high 26 points, most of it coming from the free-throw line. Nielsen tossed in four shots from the floor, but he added an impressive 18 points at the stripe.
Senior guard Ryan Matsuura had a big night for the Falcons, pouring in 21 points. He had three three-point buckets among his seven field goals and he added four points at the free-throw line.
Junior Nick Valluri supported with nine points, Peter Sclavos and Kia Agahdel had six each and Kourosh Agahdel hit one.
The season came to an end the same night for the Saratoga girls, but it finished on a good note with a 51-40 victory over Los Altos.
Seniors Katie Reed and Paige Henry finished their high school careers in style with solid scoring efforts against the Eagles. Reed led the Falcons with a 17 points, drilling a three among her eight field goals, and Henry added 13, including 7 of 9 shots from the line.
Junior Lisa Ruddy supported with seven points and senior Mika Lewis had five. Each one nailed a three. Freshman Alex Sclavos added four points, senior Tiffany Poon three and senior Sonali Sheel two.
Poon led the Falcons with nine rebounds and Henry grabbed six boards. Reed, Ruddy, Sclavos and Sheel snagged four each.
Lewis led the club with five steals and two blocked shots and she also had three assists. Reed was tops with four assists and Henry had three.
All of the Saratoga seniors--Reed, Henry, Lewis, Poon and Sheel--scored in the final game of the season.
Ruddy, Lewis and Sclavos will top a solid corps of returners for the Falcons next season that will also include juniors Jessica Lu, Sima Saadat, Sara Farsio, Sam King and Tamara Schroeder and sophomores Katie Low and Vanessa Guzman.
The Falcons wrapped up the season with a 4-8 El Camino Division record and they were 5-18 for the year.
