Wheels of trash carts
should be against curb

After a few weeks with the West Valley Collection and Recycling distributing conflicting information, I thought for sure things were settled.

I was reading the "West Valley Collections answers questions about garbage service" article in the March 13 edition and noticed the instructions: "Carts must be placed side-by-side ... with wheels facing away from the curb." On the top of the carts there are arrows with the instructions that the arrows should be facing the street; this is the opposite side of where the wheels are.

I asked four neighbors; they all took "facing away from the curb" to mean the wheels should be on the street side.

I love the new service; communications needs work.

Editor's note: That was our mistake. The wheels should be facing the curb or, in other words, wheels against the curb.

Need to stop careless
drivers on Cox Avenue

I read the article about the pedestrians injured in downtown Saratoga by an SUV. It brought to mind a daily occurrence that we experience at the crossing of Cox and DeHavilland (Miller) avenues. There is a crosswalk and a yellow pylon to allow pedestrians the right to cross.

My wife walks this every day about 6:30-7 a.m., and invariably the cars do not stop and they speed ahead even though she is in the crosswalk. They are too busy on their cell phones or drinking coffee. They are not paying attention to their driving. Two weeks ago my wife had our granddaughter in a bright green stroller, and still they did not stop.

We have complained to the sheriff's office but so far we have seen no change in the driving habits on Cox Avenue. I have tried a whistle to get their attention, still no help. What is it going to take to change the way these people drive, another accident? How about if we start to take down license numbers? The only problem is we would probably have their lawyers on our necks in record time.

What is the solution? Can the city council do anything about this situation?
