West Valley will host interviewing skills workshop and career fair
By Shannon Burkey
West Valley College hosts a free career fair on April 4 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the campus center at 1400 Fruitvale Ave. More than 22 potential employers will attend the fair and discuss their companies with anyone interested.
For those wanting to better prepare themselves for the fair, the college will hold a free interviewing skills workshop on March 22 from 10 to 11:30 a.m. in the campus center.
Both events are open to the public.
Vlasta Sekyra, a principal with the consulting firm From Start to Finish, will give advice on how to avoid the three most common interview mistakes and how to convince a company to hire you. Counselors will be on hand during the workshop to evaluate résumès.
"The idea is to try to get people geared up for the career fair," said Amy Brumgard, an adviser with the West Valley College Career Placement Center. "For those who haven't interviewed before, there are certain ways to market yourself. The job market is picking up and the workshop will give people a leg up."
