Not all authors
'know someone'
to get published

I applaud those self-published authors in your "Making Book" article for finding homes for their books outside of mainstream publishing. However, I was offended by the comments that a new author needs to "know someone" to get a foot in the door, or be "highly credentialed, or else famous or wealthy to get published."

I am an author of mystery/suspense novels, published through a traditional, major New York publisher. When I began submitting my first novel three years ago, I knew no one in the publishing business, and had no "in." Yes, I received many rejections. But my first book, Spying in High Heels, sold to an editor completely on its own merit, based on the quality of writing, as have each of my five subsequent novels, including my latest, Alibi in High Heels, coming out at the end of February.

None of the other traditionally published authors I know have sold their works based on fame, wealth or some sort of in at a publishing house. Our books have been published because of diligent research, hard work and perseverance in a very difficult business. There are some wonderfully talented authors going the self-publishing route, but please don't take away from the quality of work created by those of us who have succeeded on the path of traditional publishing.

Los Gatos

SHIFT thanks
parade officials
for family event

This is a very belated thank you from the SHIFT Coalition to Los Gatos Lions Club, LGS Recreation Department and the town of Los Gatos for making the 2007 Holidays Parade an outstanding family event.

The SHIFT Coalition (Safety and Healthy Is First) of Los Gatos, Monte Sereno and Saratoga was formed in 2005 with the goal of making environmental change that would lead to a reduction in underage drinking. Our strategies include dispelling misperceptions about teen alcohol use and modeling positive adult behavior in appropriate situations.

The family event subcommittee of the SHIFT Coalition coordinated with the recreation department and Lions to include language in parade applications that reminded participants that the town parade is a family affair and needs to be alcohol-free. This was a positive experience for all.

When we work together to create a supportive environment for our youth, we all benefit. And change is taking place already. Results of student and parent surveys, parenting tips from parents and lots of positive information are available on the website www.shiftcoalition.org. Included thereon is a listing of steering committee members and more than 50 coalition supporters.

Once again, thank you Los Gatos community, Los Gatos Lions and LGS Recreation Department--you make a difference!
