Bernadette Suffle pitched in 42 points in two games to lead the De Anza Community College women's basketball team to back-to-back wins over Cabrillo and Monterey in Coast Conference play last week.
Suffle poured in 26 points, including four three-pointers, to lead the Lady Dons to an 83-35 win over Cabrillo, and she came back with 16 points, including two threes, in a 74-39 win over Monterey. The Dons are now 4-0 in conference play and 20-5 for the year.
Judy Hofkins fired in three three-pointers on her way to 16 points in the easy win over Cabrillo. Shana Buchanan added 12 points, including a three, and Leslie Brown hit eight. Jenny Miller finished with seven points, Jaymie Woodard and Kam Simpson added four apiece, and Selena Miller, Lisa Pesiri and Jennifer Faiaipau had two each.
Buchanan was the top De Anza scorer in the win over Monterey. The 5-foot-6 freshman guard popped three threes and finished with 19 points for the winners.
J. Miller hit a pair of threes on her way to 13 points and Hofkins and Woodard tossed in eight points apiece. Woodard also canned two three-pointers. S. Miller and Faiaipau supported with four points each and Pesiri added two.
The Lady Dons visit San Mateo on Jan. 22, 6 p.m., before hosting Gavilan on Jan. 24, 5:30 p.m.
The De Anza men, meanwhile, split in a pair of games last week. The Dons pounded Bethany 70-45 in a non-conference game before losing a tough 81-75 decision to San Jose City College in Coast Conference play. The Dons are now 0-1 in the conference and 9-10 for the year.
David Newberg fired in 14 points and Aaron Zaballos hit 13 to lead the Dons to the win over Bethany to open the week. Nick Glover supported with 12 points and Harold Bordenave finished in double digits with 10.
Ed Huse added seven points for the Dons, Mike O'Neal had six, J.B. Haskett and Chris Karanastasis hit three apiece and Chris Lynam popped two.
Newberg came back with 18 and Huse pitched in 14, but De Anza dropped the conference decision to San Jose.
O'Neal supported with 13 points for the Dons and Bordenave drilled 12. Zaballos and Glover tossed in eight apiece and Karanastasis hit two.
The Dons will visit Ohlone on Jan. 22, 7 p.m., before hosting Chabot on Jan. 24, 7:30 p.m.
Whitnack is mvp
Alana Whitnack of De Anza was named the most valuable player and Carol Knight of West Valley Community College was picked as the coach of the year when the Coast Conference selected its South Division all-conference women's volleyball team this past season.
Whitnack was joined on the all-conference team by Stephanie Burch, Katrina Saiia and Jennifer Lloyd of De Anza.
The members of Knight's West Valley team picked for the all-conference squad were Kristin Robertshaw, Tara Robnett, Michelle Louie and Christina Macrenaris.
Naia Atuatasi of Monterey, Andrea Calderon and Jeanna Lyon of Hartnell and Jennifer Brose, Katie Roberts and Ashley Pritchard of Cabrillo round out the squad.
